Oprah, whose birth name is Orpah has been cited as the richest African American of the 20th century. She is currently worth $3 billion. However, she was born in an economically troubled neighborhood and raised by a single-teenaged mother in the city of Milwaukee. Initially, Oprah was raised by her maternal grandmother, who taught her to read at an early age. Due to her ability to read and write before the age of three, she was often promoted several grades ahead of her age when enrolled in school.
