The Movie Star: Omotola Jalade-Ekehinde

Background

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde is a Nigerian actress, singer, former model and philanthropist . She is an indigene of Ondo descent, who was born on 7 February, 1978 in Lagos, Nigeria to Mr. Oluwashola Jalade and Mrs Oluwatoyin Jalade.
Omotola was introduced acting when she walked a friend to an audition in 1995. Her first acting role was in the movie, Venom of Justice. That same year, she got her first crucial role in the critically acclaim film Mortal Inheritance, which is regarded as one of Nigeria's best movies ever made.
Since her Nollywood film debut in 1995, the leading actress has appeared in about 300 films, selling millions of copies. She is the first African celebrity to receive over 1 million likes on her Facebook page and at the moment her page has hit 2 million likes.

 

Family

Omotola met her husband, Matthew Ekehinde in 1994 at the age of 16, while he was 26 years. Matthew proposed two years later, after which they got married that same year. They later held a white ceremony on board a Dash 7 aircraft while flying from Lagos to Benin in 2001.
In 1997, Omotola gave birth to their first daughter and at the moment, she and her husband have four children.

Acting Career

After Omotola’s defining role in Mortal Inheritance, she won "The Best Actress in an English Speaking Movie" and the "Best Actress Overall" at the 1997 THEMA (The Movie Awards). She was the youngest actress in Nigeria at this time to achieve this feat.

Diversifying

Over the years, Omotola (popularly known as OmoSexy) launched her music career with the release of her debut album titled GBA in 2005. In 2012, she also launched her own reality show “Omotola: The Real Me” on Africa Magic Entertainment, an M-Net subsidiary broadcast on DStv. This reality show made Omotola the first Nigerian celebrity to star in their own reality show.
At the moment, Omotola is a columnist in OK! Nigeria Magazine.

Philanthropy

Omotola became a United Nations WFP (World Food Programme) Ambassador in 2005, she has been active in the “Walk the World” project and participated in the “Walk the World campaign” in Liberia with President Ellen Sir Leaf-Johnson.
Omotola is a Human Rights campaigner and her philanthropy efforts are centred on her Non-Government Organzation (NGO) project, called the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme (OYEP), which brings hundreds of youths together for the Empowerment Walk and Convention.
In 2010, Omotola lent her voice to the Rewrite The Future Campaign of Save The Children UK. Omotola became a campaigner of Amnesty International in 2011 and has participated in campaigns in Sierra- Leone and in the Niger Delta in Nigeria.

Awards and Achievement

In early 2013, Omotola made her US television debut in scripted series called Hit the Floor. In November 2013, she spoke at the 2013 edition of the WISE Summit, held in Doha, Qatar. Same year, she was named one of the most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine for their annual TIME 100 list alongside Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton and Beyonce.
In 2014, she was honoured by the Nigerian government as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for her contributions to Nigerian cinema. That same year, she was named a Tiffany Amber Women of Vision.
In 2015, she celebrated 20 years in the movie industry and has just launched an online store. The name is Omosexy Store, which is now available on leading online store, konga.com.
